Job Purpose
The primary purpose of the Merchandiser is to ensure the smooth and effective presentation of all merchandise within the store. You will be responsible for executing merchandising plans, maintaining shelf presentation standards, optimizing stock placement, and ensuring the correct pricing of all items. Your work directly contributes to achieving store sales targets, enhancing customer satisfaction, and reinforcing Checkers Hyper’s commitment to quality and excellence.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Merchandising and Shelf Management:
- Unpack and pack stock onto the shop floor following planograms and layout guidelines.
- Organize shelves and displays in an attractive, logical, and customer-friendly manner.
- Ensure that merchandise is correctly priced, labeled, and signed according to promotional and regular pricing guidelines.
- Regularly refresh displays to reflect promotional activities, seasonal themes, and stock levels.
- Stock Management and Inventory Control:
- Perform daily stock counts and report discrepancies immediately.
- Monitor stock rotation (First-In, First-Out principles) to minimize expired products and wastage.
- Identify and remove damaged, expired, or non-compliant products from shelves.
- Assist with receiving deliveries, unpacking stock, and ensuring backroom storage is organized and efficient.
- Customer Service:
- Engage professionally with customers, providing information and assistance regarding product availability, location, and features.
- Report on customer feedback and product demand to line managers to support stock planning.
- Maintain a welcoming and clean shopping environment that enhances the customer experience.
- Health and Safety Compliance:
- Maintain high standards of hygiene and safety throughout merchandising areas.
- Ensure that stock placements do not obstruct aisles or create hazards.
- Follow company policies, procedures, and legal regulations regarding health, safety, and hygiene.
- Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with supervisors, store managers, and the broader store team to ensure overall store performance goals are met.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required.
- Support colleagues during peak periods, promotions, and special store events.
Candidate Requirements
Educational Qualifications:
- Minimum: Grade 12 / Matric Certificate.
- Additional training in Retail Operations, Customer Service, or Inventory Management will be advantageous.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of experience in a retail environment, preferably within a supermarket, hypermarket, or grocery store setting.
- Prior experience in merchandising, stock replenishment, or shelf management is highly beneficial.
Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently.
- Capability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- Physically fit and able to perform manual handling tasks (e.g., lifting boxes, standing for long periods).
- Problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to work.
- Familiarity with retail systems or stock management tools will be an added advantage.
